Fishing 1909
  • Buckie and District Fishing Heritage

Fishing 1909 is the latest product of the Hedley Enterprises/Buckie & District Fishing Heritage. Narrated by Jim Farquhar and Isobel Geddes with original music by Ronnie Thain. The dvd is directed by John Crawford and produced by Hedley Enterprises.

The story starts in the end years of the 19th Century with the sail boats reigning supreme as the harvesters of the seas. Then the 'new boats on the blocks' the steam drifters take over from the sail boats. Like the sail boats they fish in all weathers but are not confined to the vagaries of the wind and tide as much as the sail boats were. Were they efficient?

Watch them fish, return ashore, deliver the catch, the gutting quines showing their skills alongside the coopers, the whole process is gone through. Don't forget to listen to the poem about the loss of the Evangeline a sail boat lost with all hands in 1905 off Stronsay - Isobel Geddes reads the poem with such poignancy and feeling - maybe even a wee tear in the corner of the eye! This DVD will work in all regions of the world.

Latest news from the heritage
Many of you will not have listened to the poem of the loss of the Evangeline, a zulu boat which was out of Portknockie, the crew were all from the village with the young cook from Cullen.  The crew perished on the night of the 16/17th January 1905 when she was caught out at sea in a severe storm.
When we did the Fishing 1909 dvd we put in the poem written by a Stronsay Minister at the time.  It is a beautiful poem and one of our lovely ladies in the Buckie Blethers, Isobel Geddes, was asked to read the poem for us so we could add it to the DVD - that and the fantastic musical background by Ronnie Thain gives the haunting poem the backing it deserves.  You must see it on the first page and please listen to it.

John Addison has recently launched another book - BCK Motor Boats Volume 1 which is on sale in the usual outlets and on the website, cost is £15. The Book has 260 pages and is rich in photographs having more than 500 photographs.  He is currently finishing the second volume which will be published in the late spring of 2012.  It is a must have book for those interested in the fishing boats of a more modern area. Postage costs in the UK are going up and up and if any member who currently gets our free Newsleter by post - we would ask you to try and assist the finances of the Centre and get your Newsletter by email - all you have to do is send your email address to info@buckieheritage.org and it will be added to the growing list of those who are taking it by email.

Our members who use the Forum on the old web site will see that it has been discontinued and all queries will be directed via our Facebook entry.  We shall still offer the same service as much as possible.  Our forum was being attacked on a daily basis by scammers attempting to join to use the forum for their own ends.  Hence the reason for closing it down.

Alwyn Anderson - this gentleman wrote to us lately seeking a number of photographs from the book BCK Motor Boats Volume 1 which is on sale from the usual outlets and our own website shop.   Unfortunately Mr Anderson did not include his address or an email address for us to get in touch with him.  If he could write again to the Buckie & District Fishing Heritage Centre, Cluny Place, Buckie, Banffshire AB56 1 HB then we will deal with his request - if anyone knows where Alwyn lives - we would like to have his address!
